Finding Balance in Turbulent Times

Finding Balance in Turbulent Times

In a world that feels increasingly fast, loud, and unpredictable, self-care becomes more than a luxury — it becomes a lifeline. Turbulent times challenge our emotional reserves and stretch our capacity to stay grounded. Yet even in the middle of chaos, it is possible to return to a place of steadiness. Balance begins with small, intentional acts of care that calm the body, settle the mind, and reconnect us to our center.

Self-care is not indulgent. It is the daily practice of tuning in to what your body and mind are trying to say. It’s stepping away from constant noise and choosing activities that restore your energy rather than drain it. That restoration looks different for everyone: a quiet walk, a warm meal, moments of stillness, a clean and organized space, or simply breathing deeply. These small choices create space between you and the stress that tries to overwhelm you.

One powerful tool for regaining balance is engaging the vagus nerve, the body’s main communication pathway between the brain, heart, and gut. When activated, the vagus nerve signals to the body that it is safe. This reduces stress hormones, lowers heart rate, and calms the nervous system. A simple vagus nerve reset can shift you out of the fight-or-flight state and into a place of grounded clarity.

You can reset your vagus nerve in just a few minutes:

  • Deep diaphragmatic breathing: Inhale slowly through your nose, let your belly rise, and exhale longer than you inhale.
  • Cold exposure: Splashing cool water on your face or a brief cool shower activates the calming reflex.
  • Humming or gentle vocalization: Vibrations from your voice stimulate the vagus nerve and relax the nervous system.
  • Long exhales and slow movements: Intentional stretching, yoga, and slow neck rotations encourage the body to release tension.

These techniques help bring you back into your body when your thoughts feel scattered or heavy. They give you a moment to pause, reset, and respond with intention rather than urgency. Here is a quick video that shows you how to reset your vagus nerve.

Finding balance during difficult seasons isn’t about perfection or productivity — it’s about presence. It’s acknowledging your limits without judgment and choosing to support yourself with compassion. When you weave self-care into your everyday routine, you build resilience. You create a foundation strong enough to hold you, even when life feels uncertain.

In turbulent times, caring for yourself is one of the most powerful steps you can take. With each small reset, each breath, and each intentional pause, you remind yourself that you deserve peace, steadiness, and balance — no matter what is happening around you.

Do deepen your work, I recommend reading the A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. Every page resonated deeply with me — his insights felt both timeless and profoundly relevant. I was excited when Oprah Winfrey selected it for her Book Club and hosted a live virtual discussion that connected readers worldwide through Skype. That series blossomed into a remarkable global movement centered on awareness, unity, and connection.

As a longtime admirer of both Eckhart and Oprah, I was fortunate to attend Oprah’s world tour event in Vancouver, Canada, where Eckhart appeared as a special guest. Their teachings continue to inspire my journey, and I’m excited to share this new bonus edition of A New Earth. Enjoy the wisdom within — it’s truly transformative.
